Did you know?

Tom Smith, a London cake baker, invented the cracker in 1847 when he adapted the French 'bon-bon' (a sugared almond wrapped in a twist of tissue paper) which he saw while on holiday in Paris.

He was later inspired by Chinese fortune cookies to add love mottos inside the crackers when he noticed they were popular gifts for loved ones and sweethearts.

Then while enjoying the crackle of his log fire he got a new idea and started experimenting to reproduce it in the crackers.  He finally got it right with two strips of thin card with small strips of salt petre pasted on them which produced a crack and a spark when pulled.
